From the Cask at Balcones Distilling: Taste Straight From the Barrel in Waco

Most whiskey tastings begin after the whiskey has been blended, proofed, bottled, labeled, boxed, shipped, and placed neatly on a shelf.

From the Cask at Balcones Distilling skips most of that.

On Friday, August 7th, Balcones will invite a small group of whiskey fans into the fourth-floor R&D warehouse at its downtown Waco distillery for a closer look at how barrel maturation shapes Texas whiskey. Instead of pouring finished products from bottles, a member of the Balcones team will pull cask-strength samples directly from four barrels selected by the distillery’s blending team.

That alone would make this a pretty good way to spend a Thursday afternoon. But the tasting does not end with everyone quietly circling their favorite sample on a tasting mat.

Help Choose a Future Balcones Single Barrel

Following a brief orientation and discussion of the Balcones maturation program, guests will taste through four curated Texas whiskey barrels. The experience may be led by Blending Manager Gabriel RiCharde, Brand Experience Manager Alex Elrod, Maturation Specialist Christopher Peel, or another member of the Balcones team.

After tasting the barrels, each guest will cast a ranked-choice ballot for their favorites.

The winning barrel will become part of Balcones’ quarterly Rickhouse Select Single Barrel program. By participating in the selection, attendees also join an exclusive group that receives early access to purchase the winning whiskey, along with special pricing on as many as four bottles during the early-access period.

In other words, you are not simply tasting whiskey from a barrel. You may be helping decide which barrel eventually makes it into a bottle.

A Look Inside the Balcones Maturation Program

Barrel maturation is always important in whiskey, but it takes on a different personality in Texas. Heat, temperature swings, barrel location, spirit character, and time can push seemingly similar barrels in very different directions.

This tasting offers a chance to explore those differences before a blending team smooths them into a finished release. Sampling several barrels side by side can reveal just how much personality an individual cask develops—and why choosing a single barrel is not always as simple as finding the loudest or highest-proof whiskey in the room.

For whiskey drinkers who enjoy digging into the details, this is the sort of experience that can make a standard tasting-room flight feel a little too civilized afterward.

Each attendee will also receive a Balcones-branded Glencairn glass and stainless-steel tasting cover.

Important Details Before You Go

The experience takes place on the fourth floor of the distillery’s R&D warehouse. Guests must be willing and able to walk up and down four flights of stairs. Anyone needing an accommodation should contact Balcones directly before the event.
