The Story

Apparently Kooper looked at the previous Cognac Cask Finished Rye releases from 2024 and 2025 and thought, “Yeah… we should probably keep doing that.”

Honestly? Fair.

This marks the third year in a row that Kooper has released their Cognac-finished rye, and at this point it has kind of become one of those “if you know, you know” tasting room bottles. The previous releases developed a pretty loyal following, and after spending some time with this year’s version, I can see why.

Kooper Family Whiskey is an NDP based in Ledbetter, Texas, but if you’ve never visited the tasting room, it’s worth the drive. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious in the best possible way. Good cocktails, solid whiskey flights, friendly folks behind the bar, and rows of future whiskey releases quietly aging nearby while you sip. There’s something kind of cool about sitting in the same room with barrels that are still figuring themselves out.

And unlike some limited releases that feel like they exist purely to make Instagram panic-buy itself into debt, this one actually backs up the hype with a well-balanced pour.

The Nose

The first thing I picked up was a fresh grassy note. Not lawn clippings grassy. More like fresh mint leaves muddled into a cocktail.

Then the sweeter notes started showing up.

If I held the glass just right, there was this fleeting candy-like aroma that reminded me of red licorice or maybe Swedish Fish. Not overpowering, but enough to make me keep going back for another sniff trying to figure out what exactly my brain was doing. There’s also a little oak hanging around underneath it all that helps ground the sweeter Cognac influence.

It’s not an aggressively complex whiskey, but it keeps your attention.

The Taste

The rye spice really shows itself through the middle and back of the palate, but the Cognac influence smooths the edges down enough to keep things balanced. There’s a mild sweetness that hits along the sides of the tongue alongside some fresh mint, light citrus, and warm vanilla.

Sadly, the Swedish Fish note did not survive the transition from nose to palate. Tragic.

Still, there’s a really nice warm sweetness here that works well with the oak and peppery finish. The finish lingers long enough to remind you this is still very much a rye whiskey, even with the Cognac cask softening things up a bit.

Final Thoughts

This is just a really well-executed rye whiskey.

The Cognac finish doesn’t overpower the whiskey or turn it into a dessert bomb. Instead, it reins in some of the sharper rye spice and adds balance without stripping away the character that makes rye interesting in the first place.

At 96 proof, it drinks comfortably neat, but I also think this would absolutely shine in a spirit-forward cocktail. A Manhattan or Boulevardier with this could get dangerous in the “well… maybe just one more” kind of way.

With only 225 bottles available and this being tasting-room-only, I don’t expect it to stick around long.

And honestly… I would have grabbed a backup to last me until the 2027 release. Fingers crossed we see it again next year.
