The Story

I have a weakness for distillery-only bottles.

There's something fun about knowing you actually had to make the trip. No online checkout. No big-box liquor store. Just you, a tasting room, and whatever happens to be sitting on the shelf that day.

That was the case with this Sixth Street Rye.

If you've ever driven between Austin and Houston, you've probably passed through Giddings. Tucked away in downtown is Dime Box Distillery, a cozy tasting room that's worth pulling off the highway for. They pour flights, mix cocktails, and keep a rotating selection of special releases behind the bar.

Sitting on the shelf was this bottle.

A 13-year-old, barrel-proof rye in Sixth Street's signature guitar-shaped bottle.

Naturally... it came home with me.

Sixth Street Spirits is Dime Box Distillery's whiskey brand. While they're best known as a non-distilling producer, they've built a reputation for sourcing quality whiskey—much of it from MGP in Indiana—and giving it a little more time to mature under the Texas climate before bottling it. They call it "whiskey for the songwriter's soul," and whether you're carrying a guitar or not, it's hard not to appreciate the care that goes into selecting barrels like this.

The Nose

The moment it hits the glass, there's no guessing what's inside.

It's classic, well aged rye.

Bright spearmint, fresh mint leaves, dusty oak, and just enough sweetness hiding underneath to keep everything balanced. Nothing flashy. Nothing trying too hard. Just exactly what I'd hoped a mature rye would smell like.

The Taste

The first sip starts sweeter than expected.

Cherry syrup and vanilla arrive immediately before the rye spices take over. Mid-palate, dark chocolate joins the party alongside cooling mint, giving the whiskey a richness that wasn't obvious on the nose.

Then the finish shifts gears one more time. Cinnamon Red Hots. Sweet oak.

A slightly grassy tannic note that reminds you this spent plenty of time in a barrel.

The finish lingers... and maybe that's its biggest strength. Long after the whiskey is gone, your mouth is watering, convincing you another sip sounds like a perfectly reasonable decision.

At 124 proof, this whiskey absolutely drinks like barrel proof should. It isn't trying to hide the alcohol behind sweetness or oak. If you're new to cask-strength whiskey, this one may introduce itself with a firm handshake... to the face.

Experienced rye drinkers, however, will probably smile.

Final Thoughts

This is simply a well-executed rye.

The years spent in Texas gave it a little more weight and richness without burying what made the original whiskey good in the first place. It still tastes unmistakably like MGP's famous rye recipe, but there's a little more depth than I usually expect.

Would I buy another bottle?

Probably not.

Not because I didn't enjoy it.

I simply can't drop another $130 when there are so many other bottles I want to try.

But if you're already making the trip to Giddings—or you're the kind of whiskey nerd who enjoys hunting unique single barrels—this is exactly the sort of bottle that makes those tasting room visits worthwhile.

Sometimes the best whiskey isn't the one everyone is talking about.

It's the one waiting on a shelf in a little Texas town you almost drove past.

Disclosure: I did purchased this bottle myself. This review was not sponsored or solicited, and all opinions are my own.
