Hush & Whisper Straight Rye Whiskey Review
100 proof and grain to glass 100% Rye Whiskey made in Bryan Texas.
Some rye whiskeys may politely introduce themselves. Others may kick open the spice cabinet and start throwing peppercorns.
Hush & Whisper Straight Rye Whiskey lands somewhere between the two. Made grain to glass in Bryan, Texas, this 100% rye whiskey brings plenty of traditional rye character without becoming sharp or unruly. It also earned a Gold Medal at the 2025 American Distilling Institute International Spirits Competition, so apparently the professionals liked it too.

Nose
The nose opens with toasted bread and warm butter, followed by fresh herbal notes of spearmint and basil. A touch of citrus and a slightly floral, musty quality add some depth.
It is a beautiful and unmistakably classic rye nose. Everything is where it should be, and everything is well executed. It does not necessarily reveal some bizarre new aroma nobody has ever found in whiskey before—but frankly, not every bottle needs to smell like candied kumquats inside an antique saddlebag.
Sometimes a rye just needs to smell like a very good rye. This one does.
Taste
Freshly baked wheat bread arrives first, joined by light notes of butter, brown sugar, and dried berries. That initial sweetness does not linger for long before the whiskey shifts into bolder rye territory.
Cracked pepper and savory herbs quickly take over, bringing considerably more spice than the nose initially suggests. The finish is medium-long, warming, and distinctly minty.
The flavor develops nicely from soft and slightly sweet into something much more assertive. My only real criticism is the mouthfeel, which is a little thinner than I would prefer—especially at 100 proof.
Final Thoughts
If I were looking for a classic rye at a good price, Hush & Whisper would be an easy bottle to reach for.
At 100 proof, it has enough strength and spice to hold its own in a spirit-forward cocktail such as an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. At the same time, it offers enough herbal character, sweetness, and complexity to remain interesting when poured neat.
What may be most exciting, though, is where this whiskey could go from here. It is already well made at a minimum of two years old, but a little more time in the barrel could add the richness and fuller mouthfeel it currently lacks.
I would love to taste this rye again at four, six, or eight years old. Right now, it is a good, dependable rye at a fair price. With additional maturity, I suspect it could become something exceptional.
For now, it is proof that Hush & Whisper may be quiet by name, but its rye has no trouble speaking for itself.
The Bottle
Before pouring the whiskey, the bottle deserves a little attention of its own. Its handsome Art Deco design feels right at home alongside the matching style of Hush & Whisper’s tasting room.
It is also one of those bottles you save after the whiskey is gone, fully intending to turn it into a lamp, candle, or some other tasteful craft project. More realistically, you will tuck it into the back of a closet, rediscover it three years later, and once again declare that it would make a fantastic lamp.
