Unreined Bourbon Four Grain Review (6 Year, 95 Proof)

If you’ve been watching the Texas bourbon scene lately, you’ve probably heard the name Unreined Bourbon.

Unreined is one of the newest members of the Texas Whiskey Trail, joining a growing lineup of distilleries and whiskey brands shaping the Lone Star State’s identity in the whiskey world.

While they do not currently operate a public distillery or tasting room you can visit, their bourbon is available on retail shelves and for direct purchase through their website. Their core Four Grain release and a cask strength version are both currently in distribution.

This six-year four-grain bourbon is distilled in Kentucky and Texas, then blended and aged with Texas climate conditions in mind.

Here’s how it drinks.

About Unreined Bourbon

Unreined Bourbon is based at Wildhorse Ranch — 600 acres of Texas countryside where their rickhouse and bottling facility are located. The brand was founded by Nelson Ingram, a native Texan who previously worked in Kentucky’s bourbon industry before launching his own operation.

After studying climate patterns across the United States, Nelson selected College Station, Texas for its humid, sub-tropical aging environment. The team focuses on blending barrels that thrive under Texas conditions, aiming to create a distinctive Texas-influenced bourbon profile.

Although you can’t yet visit a tasting room, Unreined is positioning itself as a climate-driven blending house with Texas roots and national sourcing.

Nose

On the nose, this four-grain bourbon leans dessert-forward.

Sugar cookie and buttercream frosting lead the way, with a bright maraschino cherry note layered on top. There’s soft oak underneath and a touch of baking spice rounding it out.

Sweet, but not cloying.

Palate

Vanilla and butterscotch hit immediately. The mouthfeel is cool and surprisingly refreshing for 95 proof. Mid-palate, that cherry note returns — almost like a red Jolly Rancher — before easing into a finish that lingers longer than expected.

It stays balanced and doesn’t tip into syrupy territory.

Finish

Moderate to long, with lingering vanilla, soft oak, and a touch of candied cherry sweetness.

Final Thoughts on Unreined Bourbon Four Grain

At $46, this is a well-priced, approachable Texas-connected bourbon.

The vanilla and cherry notes would play extremely well in a whiskey and cola. At 95 proof, it also stands up nicely in spirit-forward cocktails or over a cube.

Personally, I tend to prefer higher proof pours, so I’d love to see these flavors pushed a bit further. I understand Unreined offers a cask strength version, which I’ll be seeking out next.

Overall, this is a solid, shelf-worthy four-grain bourbon — especially for someone looking for something balanced, slightly sweet, and cocktail-friendly.

If you're exploring the Texas Whiskey Trail, Unreined is a brand to keep on your radar — even if it’s currently a shelf purchase rather than a tasting room stop.
