Garrison Brothers Brings Back Hye-Rye—The Bourbon They Said They'd Never Make Again

Most whiskey presales ask you to wait a few weeks. Maybe a few months.

Garrison Brothers is asking for a little more patience than that.

Beginning July 27, the Hye distillery is opening reservations for the return of Hye-Rye—a bourbon you won't be able to pick up until October 2028.

That sounds almost unbelievable until you know the story.

Hye-Rye was never supposed to come back.

When Garrison Brothers first released the high-rye bourbon, the team made it clear it was likely a one-time experiment. The rye-heavy mash bill proved notoriously difficult to work with, and the distillery openly said they didn't intend to make another batch. But whiskey fans kept asking. Year after year, Hye-Rye remained one of those bottles people hoped would someday return.

Apparently, enough people asked.

Now, Garrison Brothers has announced the bourbon's return, and they're doing something just as unusual as the whiskey itself: opening reservations more than two years before anyone takes a bottle home.

Why the Long Wait?

The answer is surprisingly simple.

Great whiskey takes time.

Unlike many limited releases that are already sitting in a warehouse waiting for a release date, Hye-Rye is still aging. By opening reservations now, Garrison Brothers can gauge demand while the whiskey continues to mature.

It's an uncommon approach, but it's also an honest reminder of how bourbon is actually made.

If you want a six-year bourbon to enjoy in 2028, someone had to start making it years ago.

What Makes Hye-Rye Different?

Hye-Rye isn't a straight rye whiskey.

It's a bourbon made with an unusually rye-forward mash bill of 52% corn, 37% rye, and 11% malted barley. That still qualifies it as bourbon, but the elevated rye content gives it a personality quite different from Garrison Brothers' flagship releases.

The familiar Texas oak is still there, but rye brings layers of black pepper, baking spices, herbal notes, citrus, and a livelier overall profile that many bourbon and rye drinkers alike have come to appreciate.

Ironically, those same characteristics that made Hye-Rye so memorable also made it one of the most challenging whiskeys the distillery has ever produced.

Sometimes the best whiskey is also the biggest headache.

Why Whiskey Fans Should Pay Attention

This isn't simply another bottle release.

It's the return of a whiskey that many people believed had quietly become part of Texas whiskey history.

Whether you're a longtime Garrison Brothers collector, a fan of rye-forward bourbons, or simply someone who appreciates seeing a distillery revisit a project they once thought was too difficult to repeat, Hye-Rye represents one of the more interesting releases on the Texas whiskey calendar.

If history is any indication, waiting until August to decide probably isn't the safest strategy.
